Dismantling
Rigid Rear Wheel
D I S M A N T L I N G T H E R E A R W H E E L
S p i n d l e N u t s .
Remove b o t h spindle nuts and chain adjuster thrust collars.
B r a k e A n c h o r Plate.
Unscrew t h e anchor plate nut and remove t h e brake
anchor plate.
W h e e l Spindle.
T u r n the wheel over and remove the bearing adjusting locknuts
and withdraw t h e rear wheel spindle.
B e a r i n g I n n e r Races.
Remove both bearing inner races. The cages w i l l be
retained by t h e .dust caps. The outer races are a press
fit
and can be removed by
tapping o u t f r o m t h e opposite side w i t h a drift.

B r a k e Shoes. Take off both brake shoe r e t u r n springs and remove the brake shoes.
B r a k e Shoe C a m . Remove the nut and washer securing the lever arm t o the cam
spindle and take
off
t h e lever arm.
W i t h d r a w the cam from the plate.
I N S P E C T I O N
A N D
R E P L A C E M E N T O F W O R N P A R T S
Cleaning.
A l l parts w i t h t h e exception of t h e brake shoes, should be thoroughly
washed i n petrol o r paraffin.
A n c h o r Plate.
Examine t h e anchor plate f o r distortion and wear, particularly i n
t h e brake cam housing.
Check that the locating stud
i s
secure.
B r a k e Cam.
Clean o u t t h e greaseways and remove any rust w i t h a fine emery
cloth.
Re-fill t h e greaseways w i t h clean grease.
R o l l e r Races.
Thoroughly clean and d r y t h e roller
races
and cages. Inspect t h e
rollers and tracks f o r pitting and scoring.
Change the bearings i f they are not up
t o standard.
Pack t h e races w i t h grease before replacing t o t h e hub.
B e a r i n g B a c k i n g Rings.
These rings should be examined carefully
as
they are
very liable t o damage when the bearings are withdrawn from the hub and w i l l
probably require replacing.
A n c h o r P l a t e a n d B e a r i n g L o c k i n g N u t s . Examine these nuts for damage t o
the threads and hexagons.
Spindle.
The rear wheel spindle should be checked for bends and signs of the
wheel nuts .having been overtightened. D o n o t replace
a
wheel spindle which
shows any sign o f damage o r distortion.
R e t u r n Springs.
Inspect f o r signs of fatigue and renew if necessary.
