Chains
SPEEDOMETER D R I V E
The drive o n all models i s taken f r o m t h e gearbox layshaft and is situated i n the
gearbox inner cover.
T o disconnect t h e drive
it
i s
only necessary t o unscrew the
cable n u t a t t h e gearbox end and w i t h d r a w t h e cable.
If an o i l leak occurs at t h e drive bush i n t h e o u t e r cover, this indicates that the bush
o i l seal has broken down.
T o remedy this fault, remove the outer cover (See page
77)
when the bush can be removed t o enable t h e fitting of a new o i l seal (See page
78).
For owners w h o wish t o convert t h e gearbox t o close ratio, no speedometer drive
i s
avai\able as
it
is usual t o incorporate a R.P.M. indicator which i s driven off the exhaust
camshaft wheel i n lieu of the dynamo drive.
For this condition, a special plug and
washer can be supplied t o replace the original drive.

tachometer and d r i v e can be installed o n the T I 0 0 and T I 1 0 t o indicate the engine
R.P.M.
The tachometer head replaces t h e speedometer head in the nacelle and the
tachometer gearbox replaces the dynamo.
The drive between the t w o units
i s
by
cable.
W h e n close r a t i o gears are employed a plug i s supplied t o blank OH the
speedometer drive i n t h e gearbox i n n e r cover.
C H A I N S
Slack o r badly adjusted chains are a prolific cause of harsh running and excessive krear.
It
is therefore o f the greatest importance that the adjustments are made correctly,
b o t h f r o n t and rear chains are adequately lubricated and a l l clamping nuts are
securely tightened.

G e a r b o x P i v o t B o l t .
This b o l t locates the gearbox t o the lower frame and it
must be slackened off before making an adjustment.
G e a r b o x C l a m p B o l t .
T o gain access t o the clamp bolt nut, remove the R.H.
footrest and push the spindle o u t of t h e way.
It
i s then possible t o apply a spanner
t o the clamp nut.
A d j u s t e r . This i s located above t h e gearbox and t o SLACKEN the chain, t u r n the
adjuster ANTI-CLOCKWISE and t o tighten t u r n CLOCKWISE.
W h e n tightening
the chain always pull t h e gearbox back after adjusting, then test the chain tension.
The reason f o r this is that the loading o n t h e rear chain pulls the gearbox towards
the rear. thus altering the chain tension.
S e c u r i n g G e a r b o x .
Re-tighten t h e clamping nut and pivot bolt and ensure
absolute security.
