ADJUSTING
THE
BRAKES
Before attempting t o make an adjuztment, t h e wheels must be raised clear of the
ground by'placing t h e machifie o n i t s stand o r stands
as
t h e case may be.
Front
B r a k e . T o adjust the brake shoes closer r o t h e bralce drum, t u r n the knurled
t h u m b n u t (See Fig.
42) i n
a
clockwise direction.
The brake should be
s e t
so that
when
it i s
fully applied t h e lever
i s
just clear
of
the handlebar. By this adjustment,
t h e rider w i l l be able t o e x e r t the maximum amount o f grip o n t h e lever.
After
making an adjustment, spin the wheel t o ensure that t h e brake shoes are n o t binding
o n t h e brake drum.
R e a r Brake.
The adjustment is made by turning t h e knurled t h u m b nut (See
Fig.
42) at t h e rear end of t h e brake operating r o d i n a clockwise direction.
After
adjusting spin t h e wheel t o ensure that t h e brake
is
not binding.
O n the Rigid
Frame Models an adjustment ca;r t e made t o the brake pedal position, but after
making an alteration, the t.raie
