RUNNING-IN

W h e n t h e engine starts, close t h e twistgrip t o a brisk tickover.
W h i l e the engine
is
COLD
t h e jet lever should be raised suficientiy t o keep the engine running fast
and evenly and should remain i n that position until
it
i s warm enough t o r u n w i t h
t h e lever fully depressed.
It
w i l l be noted that the lever i s friction loaded and can,
therefore, be set i n any position f o r any length of t i m e according t o climatic con-
ditions.
For this reason, no specific time f o r the
RICH
running conditions can be
stated.
For.many years, motorcyclists were advised t o ride t h e i r new machines at a speed
n o t in.excess of 30 m.p.h. f o r t h e
f i r s t
thousand miles.
W i t h a modern machine of
high, o r comparatively high performance, this type of running-in i s entirely useless.
and at t h e end o f the one thousand miles only very little improvement w i i l have
been effected i n the bearing surfaces o f the engine.

Running-in should be carried o u t progressively, and it i s necessary for the rider t o
make what may be termed a very definite arrangement w i t h himself before he starts
riding t h e new machine. H e should make up his mind never t o be bustled during
the running-in period and t o ride at his o w n speed entirely irrespective of the speed
o f o t h e r traffic.
It
is, naturally.arhoying when one owns a high performance machine
battery; i n this case t u r n the ignition key t o "EMG" which i s the emergency start
position.
Depress t h e kickstarter when t h e engine w i i l fire.
Once the engine is
running t h e ignition key
MUST
be returned t o the "IGN" position as the engine
should n o t be r u n longer than i s absolutely necessary i n the
"EMG"
position.
(For
special running conditions o n the "EMG" circuit see page
167).
