Fitting Rigid Rear Wheel
B e a r i n g A d j u s t i n g L o c k n u t . T u r n the wheel over and place the spindle between
the:jaws o f t h e vice (brake d r u m downwards) taking care t o protect the thread
with
lead vice clamps.
Screw b o t h bearing adjusting locknuts onto the spindle and
tighten t h e lower u n t i l it.contacts t h e bearing but leaves the wheel free t o rotate.
Lock t h e upper n u t t o the lower, then remove t h e wheel from the vice.
Check
t h a t t h e spindle w i l l rotate freely by hand. Replace t h e wheel i n t o the vice for t h e
n e x t operation (brake d r u m uppermost).

T u r n t h e brake lever towards the "ON" position: by
doing this t h e backward pressure on the brake cam
is
released. The brake shoes
are n o w i n t h e
"OFF"
position and the anchor plate can be placed into the brake
drum.
Screw the remaining shouldered locknut (small shoulder towards the brake
drum) o n t o the.spindlo and tighten fully t o that already i n position. Ease the brake
lever towards the "ON" position and spin the wheel t o check for binding of the brake
shoes o n t o t h e brake drum.

Place the thrust collar onto
t h e spindle w i t h the shoulder inwards and screw t h e spindle nut on loosely. Repeat
f o r the opposite side.
F I T T I N G T H E R E A R W H E E L TO THE F R A M E
P o s i t i o n i n g t h e W h e e l . Lift the rear wheel i n t o the frame w i t h the brake d r u m
to
t h e left hand side.
Engage t h e anchor plate l , ~ g "A", i n t o the locating channel
"B",
o n t h e inside of the left hand f o r k lug (See Fig. 47). Push the wheel up
to
the
chain adjuster screws and tighten u p t h e spindle nuts.
