continue gently t o rotate t h e wheel u n t i l t h e ptston reaches the t o p of the stroke
(this is k n o w n as T O P D E A D CENTRE"-T.D.C.).
The correct piston position
can be felt w i t h t h e t i m i n g stick by rocking the rear wheel t o and fro.
W h e n
t h e t r u e T.D.C. has been found, t h e 1954 Model 6T should be timed w i t h the piston
in this position, whereas f o r the Model ST and 1955 6T, mark the lowest part of the
t i m i n g stick which is visible at eye level and remove the stick; make a further mark
&"
(0.80 mm.) above the fi r st
mark. N o w re-insert t h e timing stick i n t o the cylinder
and rotate t h e rear wheel backwards u n t i l t h e piston has fallen about
$"
(6
mm.)
t h e n reverse t h e r o t a t i o n and slowly b r i n g t h e piston u p t o the desired mark o n the
t i m i n g stick.
This procedure ellminates any e r r o r due t o backlash i n the timing gears.
C o r r e c t P o s i t i o n i n g of t h e D i s t r i b u t o r . Stand over the right hand side of the
machine and place t h e left hand under t h e distributor, holding it i n such a manner
t h a t it can be freely turned t o the left o r right.
N o w lean across the saddle
or
twinseat and rotate the distributor housing slightly (contact breaker points nearly
vertical) until t h e points just visibly open.
Retaining the distributor i n position
tighten u p t h e clamp b o l t and make a further check.
C h e c k t h e Timing. Check the setting b y placing a
0 . 0 0 1 5 ' ' (.W
mm.) feeler gauge
( o r i f n o t available a cigarette paper
or
tissue paper) between the points.
Rotate
t h e r o t o r a r m against the springs o n t h e fuily advanced position when the feeler
gauge should just be released.
Finally check that the lever clamp bolt
i s
fully
tightened.
A long screwdriver should be held against the slotted head of t h e
clamping bolt f r o m the underside of t h e engine t o prevent it from rotation when the
n u t is being tightened.
S p a r k i n g P l u g Leads. If the timing operation has been carried out correctly, join
t h e plug leads
as
fo1iows:-
The lead nearest
to
t h e engine t h e L.H. cylinder (Drive Side).
The opposite lead t o the R.H. cylinder (Timing Side).
D i s t r i b u t o r P r o t e c t i v e Cover.
Fit t h e P.V.C. sheet over the distributor w i t h
cut-away hole o n t h e L.H. (drive side) o f t h e engine.
Fit the H.T. leads from the
distributor cap i n t o t h e cut-away.
