Rotate t h e contact breaker u n t i l the points are i n t h e upper position and just breaking
(See Fig. 22).
I n o r d e r t o ascertain accurately t h e exact point o f opening, slip a
0.0015" (0.04 mm.) feeler gauge o r a piece of tissue paper between the points.
Rotate t h e contact breaker and t h e gauge w i l l be released immediately the points
start t o open.
M a g n e t o Gear.
Carefully retain t h e contact breaker i n the set position and fit
t h e gear t o t h e magneto shaft (ensure that t h e shaft and gear bore i s free from oil).
Tap t h e gear gently t o engage the taper and fit and secure the washer and nut.
A u t o m a t i c Timing D e v i c e (A.T.D.).
ST and 6T machines w i t h magneto ignition
are fitted w i t h an automatic timing device. This

removed by unscrewing the central
b o l t which has a self-extracting action. W h e n replacing the u n i t hold the central
portion and t w i s t t h e gear against the spring. Use a pencil as
a
wedge t o hold it i n
this position while fitting the unit t o the shaft.

Re-check the timing and i f correct, replace the timing cover.
contact breaker cover, sparking plugs, H.T. lead (See Fin. 22) and t h e four rocker
inspection caps.
S p a r k i n g P l u g Leads.
If the timing operation has been carried o u t correctly,
join t h e plug leads as follows:-
The lead nearest the engine t o the R.H. cylinder (Timing side).
The opposite lead t o the L.H. cylinder (Drive side).

Clamp the coil o n t o t h e bracket and ensure that the t w o bolts are tight. Assemble
the coil and bracket o n t o the upper t w o distributor adaptor studs and fit the re-
maining nuts.
Tighten up all three retaining nuts. The distributor clamp nut and
b o l t should be loose enough t o allow t h e distributor t o rotate f o r final positioning.
R e p l a c i n g t h e D i s t r i b u t o r D r i v e .
The position of the distributor should be
adjusted t o give t h e easiest position f o r timing the ignition, and subsequent main-
tenance.
Rotate t h e distributor body until the contact breaker points are approxi-
mately at
11 o'clock when looking from the left hand of the machine. Tighten t h e
lever clamping b o l t i n this position. If a long screwdriver i s held against the slotted
head of the clamping bolt from the underside of the engine, the n u t can be tightened
more easily.
W i t h R.H. cylinder (Timing Side) at T.D.C. o n compression stroke
(both valves closed) rotate the r o t o r arm clockwise u n t i l the contact breaker points
are just beginning t o open, when the r o t o r arm is pointing t o the rear of the machine.
Holding the r o t o r arm i n this position, slide the thrust washer, followed by the
drive pinion, o n t o t h e distributor shaft so that the hole i n the pinion boss lines up
