A.C. Generator
Since, with the ignition switch at
" E M G
and the engine running, the battery receives
a charginglcurrent, the battery voltage soon begins t o rise. The rising voltage
opposes the alternator voltage, gradually effecting a reduction i n the energy available
for transfer t o the coil. I n the event of a rider omitting t o return the ignition key
from position "EMG" t o position "IGN" this reduction in spark energy will cause
misfiring t o occur and will remind the rider t o switch over t o normal running.
As previously mentioned, continuous running without a battery is readily arranged
by earthing the cable normaliy connected t o the battery negative terminal.

The alternator consists essentially of a spigot-mounted and bolted 6-coil laminated
stator with the centre-bored r o t o r carried on; and driven by, an extension t o the
crankshaft. The rotor has an hexagonal steel core, each face of which carries
a
high
energy permanent magnet keyed t o a laminated pole tip.
The pole tips'are riveted
circumferentially t o brass side plates, the assembly being cast in aluminium and
machined t o give a smooth external finish. The stator and rotor can be separated
without any need t o fit magnet keepen t o the rotor poles.
