Replacing Front Wheel
ASSEH=L!NG THE FRCjtGT
**KEEL
P r e p a r a t i o n . Thoroughly clean t h e inside o f the hub and brake drum.
Pack t h e
ball races w i t h grease.
B e a r i n g ( B r a k e Drum Side).
Press t h e bearing i n t o t h e hub f r o m the brake
d r u m side u n t i l it engages o n t h e shoulder i n t h e hub.
B e a r i n g R e t a i n i n g R i n g Nut. Screw u p and tighten t h e bearing retaining ring
n u t
(L.H.
thread) using a peg spanner.
Grease.
Pack about one egg-cupful o f grease into t h e hub.
B e a r i n g ( O p p o s i t e S i d e B r a k e Drum). Place the wheel w i t h the brake drum.
downwards o n t h e bench. Enter t h e bearing distance piece i n t o t h e hub and press
i n t h e bearings u n t i l t h e distance piece
i s
held firmly between b o t h bearings.
S p i n d l e Sleeve.
Slide t h e spindle sleeve i n t o the bearing, u p t o the collar.
B e a r i n g D u s t Cap.
Press the dust cap i n t o t h e hub end as far as possible.
A n c h o r Plate.
Re-position t o brake drum.
F I T T I N G T H E F R O N T W H E E L TO T H E F R O N T
F O R K
The front wheel must be fitted carefully. otherwise the efficient w o r k i n g of the front
fork w i l l be impaired. The split left hand cover tube lug which houses the pinch
bolt, w i l l align itself correctly on the spindle i f the instructions are adhered to.
Spindle. Check that the spindle
is
a good push fit in t h e split left hand cover tube
lug. If t h e spindle
i s
t o o tight, clean o u t t h e lug and remove any burrs o r enamel.
If this
is
n o t effective, open up the split lug gap. This procedure must be carried
o u t t o ensure that the left hand fork leg aligns itself o n the spindle sleeve.
W h e e l . Position the wheel between the f o r k legs and secure i n position by passing
the spindle through t h e split lug i n t o t h e wheel and through the other lug. D o n o t
use force, o r b o t h the spindle and t h e lugs w i l l be damaged.
A n c h o r Plate. Position the anchor plate and secure the mudguard bridge support
clip w i t h t h e anchor bolt.
S p i n d l e Nut.
Fit the spindle nut and plain washer and tighten up.
D o not tighten
t h e pinch b o l t o n t h e opposite f o r k leg yet.
F r o n t B r a k e L e v e r and Cable.
Re-fit t h e brake cable adjuster t o the abutment
o n the anchor plate and assemble the pivot b o l t t o the cable f o r k and brake lever
arm. Push a split pin through the pivot bolt and retain
i t
by bending the ends over.
F r o n t Stand.
Swing the stand back i n t o position and tighten the securing nut.
S p i n d l e P i n c h B o l t .
Check that this b o l t
is
loose and that the left hand fork leg
can slide o n t h e spindle sleeve.
Sit astride t h e machine, and, applying the f r o n t
brake, w o r k t h e f o r k up and down five o r six times. This positions t h e f o r k leg o n
the spindle, and prevents any binding between the stanchions and the cover tubes.
Tighten u p t h e spindle pinch bolt.
If
t h i s p r o c e d u r e is n o t adopted, t h e f o r k a c t i o n w i l l b e s t i f f a n d m e m b e r s
d i s t o r t e d .
