Fitting
a
Sidecar
PETROL TAP ADJUSTMENT
-
T o make an adjustment, replacement o r repair t o either type of petrol tap the petrol
must b e drained from the tank.

Type.
T o adjust a leaking tap,
first
remove the grub screw locking the
plunger t o t h e body, when t h e plunger assembly can be removed. G r i p the plunger
end i n a suitable t o o l and t u r n t h e plunger knob i n a clockwise direction; this expands
t h e c o r k washer and w i l l make a p e t r o l t i g h t
fit
when replaced in the petrol tap body.
If t h e c o r k has deteriorated t o any degree, a new cork can be fitted at
a
very low cost.
T a p e r T y p e . Remove the faulty tap and dismantle; take o u t the split pin, remove
the washer, spring back plate and w i t h d r a w the spindle and lever assembly. Clean
t h e body and spindle and then apply a smear of fine grinding-in paste t o the spindle,
add a l i t t l e o i l and rotate the spindle in t h e tap body using the same motion as when
grinding-in t h e valves. W h e n a t r u e surface
i s
obtained, wash the pans thoroughly
i n p e t r o l and apply tallow fat t o t h e spindle before assembly. Check the tension of
t h e spring and i f insufficient stretch slightly.
FITTING A SIDECAR

First t h e motorcycle must be prepared f o r sidecar use. Fork springs of the heavier
t y p e must b e fitted t o counteract t h e additional load placed on the forks.
The extra load w i l l make
it
necessary t o reduce the gear ratios t o obtain maximum
performance.
T o carry out this modification the engine sprocket should be changed
f o r one giving t h e gear ratios required (see Technical Data, pages 6 t o
9).
T w o sidecar fittings only are supplied by us, one fitting o n the
r e a r
chain stays
immediately i n f r o n t of the rear wheel spindle and t h e other at the front engine
plate r o frame bolts.
These fittings are adaptable for nearly all sidecars; all other
fittings are obtainable f r o m the sidecar manufacturers.
W h e n t h e machine
i s
prepared, attach t h e sidecar t o the f r o n t and rear lugs and
tighten up t h e universal joints, b u t
not
t h e clip pinch bolts.
Adjust the sliding
tubes through t h e lugs so that t h e sidecar
i s
as close t o the machine
a
possible:
this prevents excessive drag. Keep t h e f r o n t and rear tubes of the sidecar parallel
to
t h e ground and t h e nose elevated sufilciently t o overcome any tendency t o drag
when t h e o u t f i t
i s
taken round a right-hand bend at speed.
The next point t o
check
i s
t h e amount of toe-in. T o d o this, t w o parallel aligning sticks are required
