Starting
Flood t h e carburetter b y depressing t h e t i c k l e r o n the lid of the float bowl until the
base of t h e carburetter is just wet.
D o n o t flcod t h e carburetter until the petrol
streams o u t o f t h e air vent holes i n the float b o w l l i d as this may cause diMcult starting.
T u r n t h e engine over u n t i l compression can be felt on one cylinder. Re-position
t h e kickstarter pedal t o almost the horizontal position by freeing the clutch.
O n t h e ST model, switch the ignition key t o t h e "IGN" position (other Amal equipped
machines are f i t t e d w i t h magneto ignition).
Open t h e t h r o t t l e slightly by turning t h e twistgrip about t u r n and then depress
t h e kickstarrer pedal smartly when t h e engine should fire immediately.
A
second
o r t h i r d kick may be necessary i f the controls are incorrectly set.
Failure t o start t h e

model may be due to a flat battery, in this case t u r n the ignition
key to
"EMG"
w h i c h is t h e emergency start position. Depress the kickstarter when
the engine w i i l fire. Once the engine is running the ignition key MUST be returned
t o t h e "IGN" position, as the engine should n o t be run longer than i s absol~~teiy
necessary i n t h e "EMG" position. (For special running conditions on the "EMG"
circuit see page
167).
W h e n the engine starts the air lever can be fully opened as it warms up. It is par-
ticularly i m p o r t a n t t o open the air lever as soon
as
possible, otherwise the mixture
strength may b e t o o rich and the oil o n t h e cylinder walls will be washed OH. causing
harmful results.
Under n o circumstances allow the engine t o "idle" when cold. The throttle should
be adjusted t o a fast "tickover" i n o r d e r t o warm the oil rapidly and ensure good
circulation. This precaution w i i l reduce cylinder wear.
Finally, attention must be paid t o the o i l pressure indicator immediately the engine
starts.
T h e indicator button MUST p r o t r u d e from the release valve cap. if the
b u t t o n does n o t protrude, stop the engine at once and investigate the failure (See
page
28).
Always t u r n t h e petrol taps "OFF" when parking the machine.
