Assembling Clutch
C l u t c h .
Fit t h e clutch locking plate i n t o t h e housing and t o t h e clutch centre,
then assemble t h e plain washer, locking washer and n u t t o t h e gearbox mainshaft.
W e l l tighten t h e n u t and lock by bending d o w n the locking washer tabs.
Remove

t h e locking plate.

E n g i n e S p r o c k e t . T o this part o n t h e models
ST and 6T, first,
fit t h e key t o t h e
I
shaft and then t h e plaln washer, r o t o r , locking washer and finally t h e securing nut.

t h e key, distance piece; locking washer and securing nut.
C l u t c h Plates. If new corked plates are t o be fitted, first soak t h e m i n o i l (SAE 20).
First assemble a steel plate t o t h e housing and then a corked plate and so o n u n t i l
all t h e plates are i n position.
C l u t c h Push Rod.
Fit i n t o t h e gearbox mainshaft.
O u t e r P r e s s u r e P l a t e .
Assemble this complete w i t h cups t o t h e clutch.
H o l d
i n position and enter t h e four springs and then secure w i t h t h e four slotted nuts.
Each n u t should be just started o n t h e pin thread t o aid assembly. W h e n all the nuts
are i n position, screw t h e m down u n t i l t h e thread o f the pin is level w i i h t h e o u t e r
face of t h e nut.
C l u t c h C a b l e A d j u s t m e n t .
Screw i n the adjuster inside the gearbox filler cap
until t h e lever leans o u t about
15".
N o w adjust the cable at t h e lug on t o p of t h e
gearbox t o give
+
in. free movement i n the cable.
T r u e i n g t h e C l u t c h . The clutch outer pressure plate must spin true, otherwise t h e
plates w i l l n o t separate when t h e clutch is disengaged, thus causing faulty gear
changing and t h e engine t o stall i n traffic due t o "creep".
T o check, disengage t h e
clutch b y operating the handlebar clutch lever and depressing the kickstarter when
the pressure plate can be observed rotating. If the pressure plate "wobbles" m a r k
t h e place which projects t h e furthest and screw in, half a turn, t h e nearest slotted
nut.
Repeat t h e test.
It must be emphasized that extra care taken w i t h this
operation w i l l make for a smooth and effective clutch engagement.
P r i m a r y C h a i n A d j u s t m e n t .
Check, and i f necessary carry o u t t h e adjustment
as
described o n page 92.
Chaincase O u t e r Cover.
Grease t h e paper gasket and f i t t o the outer cover.
Position the o u t e r cover t o t h e inner cover b u t o n the models 5T

thread t h e
alternator cables through t h e hole i n t h e inner cover and then secure the cover
w i t h the fixing screws.
Pull t h e alternator leads through t h e inner chaincate t o
prevent them fouling the primary chain.
Connect the alternator leads and slide
the grommet down t h e cable and press the boss on the outside of the inner cover.
F o o t r e s t a n d B r a k e Pedal. Replace t h e left hand footrest and tighten t h e nuts o n
both sides of t h e footrest rod.
Fit t h e brake pedal and secure.
E x h a u s t P i p e a n d Silencer.
Replace.
Oil. Remove t h e chaincase filler cap and pour
f- pint of o i l
(SAE
20) i n t o t h e crtlng
Replace the filler cap.
