The dynamo works i n conjunction w i t h a regulator u n i t t o
give compensated voltage control.
Although combined structurally, t h e regulator
and cut-out are electrically separate.
Both are accurately adjusted during manu-
facture and should n o t be tzmpered with.
The regulator provides
a
completely automatic control.
It
ca9es the dynamo t o
give an o u t p u t which varie's according t o the load o n the battery and
i t s
state ofcharge.
W h e n t h e battery is discharged, t h e dynamo gives a high output, b u t i f t h e battery i s
fully charged then the dynamo gives only a trickle charge so as t o keep t h e battery
i n good condition.
I n addition t o controlling the output of t h e dynamo according
t o t h e condition of the battery, t h e regulator provides f o r an increase of o u t p u t t o
balance t h e current taken by the lamps when i n use.
The cut-out
i s
an automatic switch which connects the dynamo t o the battery only
when the dynamo voltage exceeds tlie battery voltage, o r conversely, which dis-
connects t o prevent t h e battery discharging through the dynamo windings.
The dynamo o u t p u t is accurately set t o suit the requirements of the motorcycle and
i n normal service the battery w i l l be kept i n a good condition.
If due t o special
running conditions
i t
i s
found that the battery i s not kept i n a charged condition o r
i s being overcharged, the regulator should be re-set by
a
Lucas Service D e p o t o r
Agent.
Accurate measuring equipment i s required t o set t h e regulator correctly.
A m m e t e r Readings.
Normally, during day t i m c r u n n i n g when t h e battery is i n
good condition, t h e dynamo gives only a trickle charge so that the ammeter needle
m o u l d show only a small deflection t o the
"
j"
side of the scale.

A discharge reading should be observed immediately after switching on t h e head-
lamp. This usually happens after a long run when the battery voltage is high. A f t e r
a
short t i m e the battery voltage w i l l drop and the regulator w i l l respond, causing
I
the dynamo o u t p u t t o balance t h e lamp load.
L u b r i c a t i o n .
N o lubrication is required t o these models as ball bearings are fitted
at b o t h ends.
These bearings are packed w i t h grease,during assembly and w i l l
last u n t i l t h e machine i s taken down for a general overhaul.
I n s p e c t i o n o f B r u s h g e a r a n d C o m m u t a t o r .
Every six months, remove t h e
commutator cover and inspect the brurhgear and commutator. The brushes, which
are held i n boxes by means of springs, must make firm contact w i t h t h e commutator.
Move each brush t o see that it i s fre; t o slide i n
i t s
holder; i f it sticks, remove it and
clean w i t h a cloth moistened w i t h petrol. Care must be taken t o replace t h e brushes
in t h e i r original position, otherwise they w i l l not "bed" properly o n the commutator.
i f after long service t h e brushes have become worn t o such an extent that they w i l l
not bear properly o n t h e commutator they must be replaced. Always use genuine
Lucar; brushes, which should be fitted by a Service Agent so that they can be properly
bedded t o t h e commutator.
