Changing Girling Spring Units
TO
I N C R E A S E T H E S T A T I C S P R I N G R A T E
If additional weight i s added t o the rear of the machine such
as
a heavy pillion
passenger and pannier equipment w i t h luggage, the swinging fork member will
position itself above the horizontal. This condition w i l l reduce the springing effect
and t o overcome
it,
ahe main spring poundage in the damper unit can be increased
by turning the spring abutment cam (see Fig. 57) with the 'C' spanner (supplied in
the toolkit) t o engage the second position, or, if necessary the third position.
C H A N G I N G T H E SPRINGS
D I S M A N T L I N G
U n i t F i x i n g Bolts. Remove the top and bottom bolts when the unit can be detached.
D u s t Cover. Secure the bottom eye between vice jaws on the side faces (protect
the jaws with aluminium clamps). Grip and depress the cover sufficiently to enable
the removal of the split spring retainer collars.
Spring. Remove the dust cover and spring

The assembly

carried out in exactly the revetse order t o the dismantling sequence
but the following observations should be careluily noted.
Springs.
Before replacing, lubricate w i t h high melting point grease
D u s t Covers. Ensure that these are not damaged and are completely free from
any foreign matter. Either would cause noisy operation of the unit.
U n i t Piston Rod. Do not lubricate w i t h either oil o r grease but ensure that the
rod
i s
perfectly clean.
Checking U n i t O p e r a t i o n .
The piston rod should not be operated with the
unit in the upside down position. The movement must be checked in the working
position, otherwise air w i l l pass into the pressure tube causing the oil to emulsify,
resulting i n inefficient
damping until the unit rectifies itself
M A X I M U M M O V E M E N T
The stroke of the units i s
3 i "
(9.84 cmr.) and this allows for approximately
16"
(8.0
mm.) compression of the bump rubber.
