Assembling Rear Wheel
A S S E M B L I N G T H E R E A R B R A K E A N C H O R P L A T E
B r a k e S h o e C a m . Grease t h e spindle o f t h e cam and insert
it
i n t o t h e housing
from t h e inside
of
t h e brake anchor plate. Place the return spring i n position (long
end away from t h e anchor plate) and tap t h e lever a r m o n t o the square shoulder at
right angles t o t h e flat side of t h e cam.
Fit t h e lever nut and tighten.
B r a k e Shoes. Place the t w o shoes side by side i n t h e positions which they w i l l occupy
i n the drum.
Fit t h e return springs
to
t h e retaining hooks, then, taking a shoe i n
each hand and at t h e same t i m e holding t h e springs i n tension, position t h e shoes t o
the anchor plate.
By turning t h e t o p of t h e shoes inwards, the assembly can be
placed over t h e cam and t h e fulcrum pin and snapped down i n t o positiohby pressing
on t h e outside o f t h e shoes. W i n d t h e brake lever arm anti-clockwise
to
engage t h e
return spring.

B r a k e Drum. i f t h e brake drum and sprocket has been removed f o r rectification,
it
should be secured i n position w i t h t h e eight locking nuts. Ensure that four locking
washers are used both on the inside and t h e outside of the brake drum.
Tap t h e
locking tabs up the sides of the bolts t o lock them.
Bearing, B r a k e
Drum
Side.
Place t h e locking ring i n t o the hub f r o m t h e brake
drum side until it contacts the small shoulder inside t h e hub.
Press t h e bearing in,
up t o t h e backing ring, and secure i n position by tightening the ring nut.
Lock the
nut w i t h t h e grub screw.
Grease.
Put about an egg.cupful o f grease i n t o the hub.
Bearing, R.H. Side.
Turn the wheel brake d r u m downwards and Insert t h e
bearing distance piece i n t o the hub u n t i l
it
contacts t h e brake d r u m side bearing.
Press t h e R.H. side bearing into the hub, followed by the dust cover.
Spindle.
Insert t h e spindle through the bearings and secure the spindle (opposite
brake drum) i n t h e vice.
D o n o t forget t o protect the spindle threads against
damage by fitting soft clamps over t h e vice jaws.
A n c h o r P l a t e Assembly.
Fit t h e distance piece (shouldered end towards t h e
operator) and, holding the brake lever slightly towards the
"ON" position t o over-
come t h e tension of the return spring, fit the anchor plate over t h e spindle and t o
the brake drum.
Replace the anchor plate securing n u t t o the spindle and securely
tighten.
S h o u l d e r e d S p i n d l e Nut. Remove t h e wheel f r o m t h e vice and replace w i t h t h e
brake anchor plate downwards, this t i m e holding t h e spindle nut.
Fit and screw
down t h e shouldered n u t until it
is
hard against t h e bearing.
The wheel
i s
n o w ready f o r assembly t o t h e frame.
