Rear Broke (Rigid Wheel)
B r a k e Drum and S p r o c k e t .
Examine t h e brake d r u m f o r scoring o r ovallty.
I f t h e d r u m needs skimming, it can be removed f r o m t h e wheel b y bending back
t h e tabs o n t h e brake d r u m lock plates and removing t h e b a k e d r u m bolts.
Re-

t h e reverse procedure.
If
it
should be necessary t o skim m o r e than
,010" (0.254 mm.) from t h e drum,
it
should be replaced b y a n e w drum.
Examine
t h e sprocket teeth for wear. The t o p o f t h e t o o t h should be flat and approximately
ITS

(3.2 mm.) across.
W h e n t h e teeth become worn, t h e profile becomes pointed
and sharp. T h ~ s condition
i s
dangerous and damage t o t h e chain is likely t o follow.

Grease t h e spindle o f t h e brake operating
cam and insert
it
into the housing f r o m t h e inside o f t h e brake anchor plate.
Place
o n the r e t u r n spring (long end away from the anchor plate) and tap t h e lever a r m
o n t o the square shoulder
a t
right angles
to
t h e flat side of t h e cam.
Place o n t h e
lever n u t and tighten up.
B r a k e Shoes.
Place the t w o shoes on the bench In their relative positions.
Fit
the r e t u r n springs t o t h e retaining hooks, then, taking a shoe i n each hand and at
the same time holding the springs i n tension, posltion the shoes
to
t h e anchor plate.
By turning the t o p of t h e shoes inwards, t h e assembly can be placed over t h e cam and
fulcrum pin and snapped down i n t o position by pressing o n t h e outsides o f the shoes.
W i n d the brake lever a r m anti-clockwise
to
engage t h e r e t u r n spring.
A S S E M B L I N G T H E R E A R W H E E L
Hub.
Assemble the brake d r u m t o t h e hub.
Enter the fixing bolts f r o m t h e hub
side and position the locking washers inside t h e brake drum.
F i t t h e outer lock-
washer and the fixing b o l t nuts; when fully tightened, lock t h e m by bending u p t h e
locking washer tabs.
B e a r i n g B a c k i n g Ring.
Place t h e backing r i n g i n the brake d r u m side o f t h e h u b
and then insert the bearing o u t e r race.
The race should be pressed i n t o t h e hub.
Repeat operation
t o
t h e opposite side.
Inner
R o l l e r Race.
Pack the race w i t h grease and enter t h e brake d r u m side
o u t e r race.
Place the dust cover over the bearing and press i n t o posltion.
T u r n
t h e wheel over and pack i n t o t h e hub, a small quantity of grease (egg-cupful).
F i t
t h e remaining race and dust cover.
Spindle.
If t h e shoulder n u t has been removed from the spindle,
it
should n o w
be replaced and screwed down t o t h e end o f the spindle thread (the smaller shoulder
of the n u t must be i n t h e o u t e r position). Enter t h e spindle i n t o the hub from t h e
brake side.
