utilities Utility programs. The programs that
allow an operator to manage library resources and
to monitor overall library performance.

VOLSER Volume serial number. A six-character
alphanumeric label used to identify a volume.
volume A data carrier mounts or dismounts as a
unit; for example a reel of magnetic tape or a disk
pack.

write-enabled A setting on a cartridge that
allows data to be written on the tape.
write-protected A setting on cartridge tapes
that prevents data from being written on the tape.
Reading data is still possible.
write tape mark (WTM) An operation that
records a special magnetic mark on tape to identify
a particular location.
