P
pass-thru port (PTP) A mechanism that
enables a cartridge to pass from one LSM to
another in a multiple LSM ACS. See also cartridge
exchange mechanism.
PCAP See priority cartridge access port.
priority cartridge access port An assembly
that allows an operator to enter or eject one
cartridge during automated operations. The PCAP
is located on the 80-cell CAP access door of an
LSM.
PTP See pass-thru port.
R
read/write head The data sensing and
recording unit of a diskette drive or tape drive
(IBM)
ready State in which the library is powered on
and has completed its initialization and initial
program load (IPL). It is ready to accept user
requests.
recoverable error An error condition that can
be automatically corrected (for example, by
initiating a retry operation) and, when corrected,
allows continual processing of a job, program, or
hardware function.
robot An electromechanical device for locating
and moving cartridges.
S
safety interlock switch A switch that
disconnects power to the library when the front
door is opened.
SD-3 A high-performance information storage
and retrieval system that reads and writes in
helical-scan format.
software All or part of the programs,
procedures, rules, and associated documentation
of a data processing system.
9206
standby The status of a station that has been
placed online but is connected to the standby
LMU of a dual LMU ACS.
standby LMU The redundant LMU in a dual
LMU configuration that is ready to take over
functions if a master LMU fails or when the
operator issues the Switch command.
station A hardware path between the host
computer and an LMU over which the controlling
software and LMU send control information.
switchover The action of the standby LMU
becoming the master LMU.
T
T9840 A cartridge drive that reads/writes to
tapes; the housing for the tape contains supply and
take-up reels.
T9940 A cartridge drive that reads/writes to
tapes; the housing for the tape contains a single
reel.
T9x40 Used to indicate either T9840 or T9940
when either or both types of drives are being
referred to.
tape drive A device that moves magnetic tape
and includes mechanisms for reading and writing
data on the tape.
tape library Synonym for library storage module.
transport An electromechanical device capable
of threading tape from a cartridge, moving the tape
across a read/write head, and writing data onto or
reading data from the tape.
U
unrecoverable error An error condition that
cannot be automatically corrected and requires an
external operation for possible correction. An
unrecoverable error causes termination of a job,
