F
file-protect To prevent the destruction or
overwriting of data stored on a cartridge tape. See
also write-protect.
firmware An ordered set of instructions and
data stored in a way that is functionally
independent of main storage; for example,
microprograms stored in a ROM.
H
hand assembly A part of the library robot
whose function is to grasp cartridges and move
them between storage cells and drives. A camera
on the hand assembly reads cartridge volume
labels.
home location The cell in a library storage
module (LSM) in which a cartridge is stored. A
cartridge returns to this location when it
dismounts from a drive or cartridge tape unit.
host The primary computer on a network, with
which other computers interacts.
I
ID Identifier or identification.
initial program load (IPL) A process that
activates a machine reset and loads system
programs to prepare a computer system for
operation. Processors having diagnostic programs
activate these programs at IPL execution. Devices
running microcode software usually reload the
functional microcode software from a diskette or
disk drive at IPL execution.
input/output (I/O) The process of moving
data between a host and an external device. I/O is
a collective term for commands, reading, and
writing.

power to the library when the front door is

drive).
in-transit cartridge A cartridge left in the
robot hand. The Data Management Software must
recover this cartridge to a known location to clear
out the software in-transit record.
in-transit record A temporary record written
by the host software, noting that a cartridge has
been moved from its home cell. After this
cartridge return to its home cell, the record erases.

ACSs and associated volumes, and the library
control data set that describes the state of the
ACSs.
library control unit (LCU) The portion of
