The G eneric A ttribute R egistration P rotocol ( GARP) p rovides a g eneric f ramework w hereby d evices i n
a b ridged L AN, e .g., e nd s tations a nd s witches, c an r egister a nd d e-­‐register a ttribute v alues, s uch a s
VLAN I dentifiers, w ith e ach o ther. I n d oing s o, t he a ttributes a re p ropagated t o d evices i n t he b ridged
LAN, a nd t hese d evices f orm a " reachability" t ree t hat i s a s ubset o f a n a ctive t opology. G ARP d efines
the a rchitecture, r ules o f o peration, s tate m achines, a nd v ariables f or t he r egistration a nd
de-­‐registration o f a ttribute v alues.
A G ARP p articipation i n a s witch o r a n e nd s tation c onsists o f a G ARP a pplication c omponent, a nd a
GARP I nformation D eclaration ( GID) c omponent a ssociated w ith e ach p ort o r t he s witch. T he
propagation o f i nformation b etween G ARP p articipants f or t he s ame a pplication i n a b ridge i s c arried
out b y t he G ARP I nformation P ropagation ( GIP) c omponent. P rotocol e xchanges t ake p lace b etween
GARP p articipants b y m eans o f L LC T ype 1 s ervices, u sing t he g roup M AC a ddress a nd P DU f ormat
defined f or t he G ARP a pplication c oncerned.

The s witch s tores i ts c onfiguration i n a n umber o f t ext f iles i n C LI f ormat. T he f iles a re e ither v irtual
(RAM-­‐based) o r s tored i n f lash o n t he s witch.
There a re t hree s ystem f iles:
•
running-­‐config: A v irtual f ile r epresents t he c urrently a ctive c onfiguration o n t he s witch. T his
file i s v olatile.
•
startup-­‐config: T he s tartup c onfiguration f or t he s witch, r ead a t b oot t ime.
•
default-­‐config: A r ead-­‐only f ile w ith v endor-­‐specific c onfiguration. T his f ile i s r ead w hen t he
system i s r estored t o d efault s ettings.
It i s a lso p ossible t o s tore u p t o t wo o ther f iles a nd a pply t hem t o r unning-­‐config, s witching
configuration.
