Switching frames is based upon the DMAC address contained in the frame. The switch builds a table
that m aps M AC a ddresses t o s witch p orts t o i dentify w hich p orts t he f rames s hould g o t o ( based u pon
the DMAC address in the frame). This table contains both static and dynamic entries. The static
entries a re c onfigured b y t he n etwork a dministrator i f t he a dministrator w ants t o d o a f ixed m apping
between t he D MAC a ddress a nd t he s witch p orts.
The frames also contain a MAC address (SMAC address), which shows the MAC address of the
equipment sending the frame. The SMAC address is used by the switch to automatically update the
MAC t able w ith t hese d ynamic M AC a ddresses. D ynamic e ntries a re r emoved f rom t he M AC t able i f i t
does n ot s ee a ny f rames w ith t he c orresponding S MAC a ddress a fter a c onfigurable a ge t ime.
