2-­‐11   I PMC
 
ICMP   is   an   acronym  for   Internet  Control   Message   Protocol.  It   is   a   protocol   that   generates  the   error  
response,   diagnostic,   or   routing   purposes.   ICMP   messages   generally   contain   information   about  
routing   d ifficulties   o r   s imple   e xchanges   s uch   a s   t ime-­‐stamp   o r   e cho   t ransactions.  
 
2-­‐11.1   I GMP   S nooping  
The  function  is  used  to  enable  the  multicast  groups  to  forward  the  multicast  packet  to  the  member  
ports,   and   avoids   wasting   the   bandwidth   while   IP   multicast   packets   are   running   over   the   network.  
This   i s   b ecause   a   s witch   t hat   d oes   n ot   s upport   I GMP   o r   I GMP   S nooping   c annot   t ell   a   m ulticast   p acket  
from  a  broadcast  packet,  so  it  can  only  treat  them  all  as  broadcast  packets.  Without  IGMP  Snooping,  
the   m ulticast   p acket   f orwarding   f unction   w orks   t he   s ame   a s   i t   d oes   f or   a   b roadcast   p acket.  
A  switch  supported  IGMP  Snooping  with  the  functions  of  query,  report,  and  leave,  a  type  of  packet  
exchanged  between  IP  Multicast  Router/Switch  and  IP  Multicast  Host,  can  update  the  information  of  
the  Multicast  table  when  a  member  (port)  joins  or  leaves  an  IP  Multicast  Destination  Address.  With  
this   f unction,   o nce   a   s witch   r eceives   a n   I P   m ulticast   p acket,   i t   w ill   f orward   t he   p acket   t o   t he   m embers  
who   j oined   a   s pecified   I P   m ulticast   g roup   b efore.  
The   packets   will   be   discarded   by   IGMP   Snooping   if   the   user   transmits   multicast   packets   to   the  
multicast   group   that   had   not   been   built   up   in   advance.   IGMP   mode   enables   the   switch   to   issue   the  
IGMP   function   that   you   enable   IGMP   proxy   or   snooping   on   the   switch,   which   connects   to   a   router  
closer   to   the   root   of   the   tree.   This   interface   is   the   upstream   interface.   The   router   on   the   upstream  
interface   s hould   b e   r unning   I GMP.  
 
2-­‐11.1.1   B asic   C onfiguration  
The  section  describes  how  to  set  the  basic  IGMP  snooping  on  the  switch,  which  connects  to  a  router  
closer   to   the   root   of   the   tree.   This   interface   is   the   upstream   interface.   The   router   on   the   upstream  
interface   s hould   b e   r unning   I GMP.  
 
Web   I nterface    
To   c onfigure   t he   I GMP   S nooping   p arameters   i n   t he   w eb   i nterface:  
1. Click   C onfiguration,   I PMC,   I GMP   S nooping,   B asic   C onfiguration.  
2. Select   e nable   o r   d isable   f or   a   G lobal   c onfiguration.  
3. Select   w hich   p ort   w ill   b e   a   R outer   P ort   o r   e nable/disable   t he   F ast   L eave   f unction..  
4. Scroll   t o   s et   t he   T hrottling   p arameter.  
5. Click   A pply   t o   s ave   t he   s etting.  
6. To   c ancel   t he   s etting,   c lick   t he   R eset   b utton.   I t   w ill   r evert   t o   p reviously   s aved   v alues.
