2-­‐17.2   P rotocol   -­‐ based   V LAN  
 
This   s ection   d escribes   P rotocol   -­‐ based   V LAN.   P rotocols   s upported   b y   t he   s witch   i nclude   E thernet   L LC  
and   S NAP.  
 
LLC  
The  Logical  Link  Control  (LLC)  data  communication  protocol  layer  is  the  upper  sub-­‐layer  of  the  Data  
Link   L ayer   ( which   i s   i tself   l ayer   2 ,   j ust   a bove   t he   P hysical   L ayer)   i n   t he   s even-­‐layer   O SI   r eference   m odel.  
It   provides   multiplexing   mechanisms   that   make   it   possible   for   several   network   protocols   (IP,   IPX,  
Decnet,  and  Appletalk)  to  coexist  within  a  multipoint  network  and  to  be  transported  over  the  same  
network   media,   and   can   also   provide   flow   control   and   automatic   repeat   request   (ARQ)   error  
management   m echanisms.  
 
SNAP  
The   S ubnetwork   A ccess   P rotocol   ( SNAP)   i s   a   m echanism   f or   m ultiplexing   o n   n etworks   u sing   I EEE   8 02.2  
LLC.   More   protocols   can   be   distinguished   by   the   8-­‐bit   802.2   Service   Access   Point   (SAP)   fields.   SNAP  
supports  identifying  protocols  by  Ethernet  type  field  values;  it  also  supports  vendor-­‐private  protocol  
identifier  spaces.  It  is  used  with  IEEE  802.3,  IEEE  802.4,  IEEE  802.5,  IEEE  802.11,  and  other  IEEE  802  
physical  network  layers,  as  well  as  with  non-­‐IEEE  802  physical  network  layers  such  as  FDDI  that  use  
802.2   L LC.

This  page  allows  you  to  add  new  protocols  to  Group  Name  (unique  for  each  Group)  mapping  entries  
as   w ell   a s   a llow   y ou   t o   s ee   a nd   d elete   a lready   m apped   e ntries   f or   t he   s elected   s tack   s witch.

To   c onfigure   P rotocol   -­‐ based   V LAN   c onfiguration   i n   t he   w eb   i nterface:  
 
1.       Click   P rotocol-­‐based   V LAN   c onfiguration   a nd   a dd   a   n ew   e ntry.  
2.       Specify   t he   E thernet   L LC   S NAP   P rotocol   a nd   G roup   N ame.    
3.       Click   A pply.
