About Thin Provisioning and Smart Pools
Thin provisioning is a software feature to manage storage that maximizes physical usable capacity of disk
arrays. It is implemented by creating one or more Thin Provisioning pools (THP pools) of physical storage
space using multiple LDEVs. Then, you can establish virtual THP volumes (THP V-VOLs) and connect
them to the individual THP pools. In this way, capacity to support data can be randomly assigned on
demand.
Smart Pools is also a feature in the XP7 disk array using which you can configure a storage system with
multiple storage tiers. This support allows you to allocate data areas with heavy I/O loads to higher-speed
media and to allocate data areas with low I/O loads to lower-speed media. In this way, you can make the
best use of the capabilities of installed storage media. Up to three storage tiers consisting of different
types of data drives are supported in a single pool of storage.
PA enables you to monitor the performance of the ThP and Smart Pools installed in the XP and the XP7
disk arrays. The status of the ThP and Pools component is based on the threshold value that you have
set for the Pool Average Read Response Time and Pool Average Write Response Time metrics.
Use the Actions menu to plot Average IOPH per Capacity for the array. On the graph, the x-axis
indicates Capacity in GB, and the y-axis indicates the average number of IO per hour. Click on the Smart
Pool ID to add or remove the record from the graph. Hover over a node on the individual line in the graph
for more information.
Use the Template feature for frequent monitoring of performance metrics, and foresee performance
bottlenecks in advance. Templates can provide an at-a-glance information on the behavior of critical
components and metrics.
