Problem: Battery does not charge
Condition
1. Battery wires/connections shorted — loose — open
2. Serpentine belt loose — bad
3. Alternator/regulator failed
Problem: Charging unstable
Condition

2. Serpentine belt loose
3. Alternator/regulator failing
Problem: Starter does not engage
Condition
1. Battery charge low
2. Switch contacts defective
3. Start relay defective
4. Starter relay defective
5. Wiring connections loose — disconnected
6. Key switch defective
Problem: Battery discharges too rapidly
Condition
1. Battery sulfided
2. Electrical system excessively loaded
3. Battery short-circuited
4. Charging system not charging
Problem: Battery polarity reversed
Condition
1. Battery incorrectly connected
Remedy
1. Repair — replace — tighten battery wires/connections
2. Tighten — replace belt
3. Replace alternator assembly
Remedy
1. Repair — replace — tighten battery wires/connections
2. Tighten — replace belt
3. Replace alternator assembly
