Stylus Pro 5000
PROBLEM: LEDS INDICATE "FATAL ERROR".
The printer indicates a "Fatal Error" condition by turning on all the LEDs.
This is caused by trouble in one or more of the following mechanisms:

PF motor control mechanism
CR motor control mechanism

Pump/ASF drive mechanism
To determine the cause of the problem, follow the steps in the sections
below to isolate the defective part.
Checking the PF motor drive line
When the printer is turned on, the PF motor rotates first. If you notice a
fatal error immediately after turning the printer on, check the following:
Check the internal coil resistance of the PF motor. If the motor doesn't

meet these specifications, replace it.
 Specification:
2.8 10% (each phase)
 Check points:
Between Pins 1 and 3 or Pins 2 and 4 of CN15
on the C228 DRV board

If the fatal error still occurs, check the other motors as described in the
following sections.
Checking the CR motor drive line
When the PF motor releases the carriage lock and ink valve, the CR motor
starts operating. The printer then checks that the carriage is moving
through the scanning area normally. If a fatal error occurs, check the
following:
Check the internal coil resistance of the CR motor. If the motor doesn't

meet these specifications, replace it.
 Specification:
4.3 10% (each phase)
 Check points:
Between Pins 1 and 3 or Pins 2 and 4 of CN14
on the C228 DRV board

If the fatal error still occurs, check the other motors as described in the
following sections.
Checking the Pump/ASF motor (1)
The printer starts the ink absorbing operation after the carriage returns to
the home position. The carriage hits the ink disengage/engage mechanism
switch, then the D/E mechanism transmits torque from the Pump/ASF
motor to the gear train on the pump side. If a fatal error occurs during this
operation, do the following:

Check the internal coil resistance of the Pump/ASF motor. If the motor
doesn't meet this specification, replace it.
 Specification:
3.9 10% (each phase)
 Check points:
Between Pins 1 and 3 or Pins 2 and 4 of
CN16 on the C228 DRV board

Make sure the D/E switch (a slider switch on the home position side) is
working properly. (Push the switch toward the home position and see if
the spring tension brings it back when you release it.)

Manually rotate the transmission gear (white) next to the motor pinion
gear and check that each transmission gear for the pump drive turns
smoothly.
If the fatal error still occurs, check the other motors as described in the

following sections.
