12. Use a voltmeter to check the change in signal when the printer is on
and off.
13. It's possible that the nozzle selector control signals or voltage from the
printhead driver are not being sent to the printhead. Therefore, check
that the FFCs are correctly connected to CN10 and CN11 on the C228
DRV board.
14. Check that the FFCs for the printheads are correctly connected. If not,
the PZT may have been exposed to excess current, damaging the
printhead.
15. Check the waveform of the head driver voltage from the C228 DRV
board. If the waveform is abnormal, replace the C228 DRV board.
16. Replace the printheads.
Note: Remember that the printer has two printheads: the left one for dark
colors and the right one for light colors. Each printhead has a different part
number, so be sure to install the correct printhead when making repairs.
Using the wrong head affects print quality.
17. The C228 MAIN board may be defective. Replace the C228 MAIN
board.
PROBLEM: PRINTHEADS ARE MISALIGNED.
Make sure the printhead nozzles are clean. If they are, perform the
following adjustments, in this order:
Bi-D adjustment,
Printhead gap adjustment,
Printhead angle adjustment,
Printhead vertical adjustment
Perform these adjustments in the order specified above. See Chapter 5 for
detailed instructions. Print a test pattern (as described in Chapter 5) after
each adjustment to see if the problem is solved.
PROBLEM: PRINTER FAILS TO LOAD PAPER.
1. Make sure the type of paper you are using is compatible with the
cassette. See the User's Guide for details.
2. Make sure the paper stack isn't too high for the tray.
3. Check that the edge guides are snug against the sides of the paper
stack.
4. The separation pad in the paper cassette must be kept clean to
provide proper friction with the paper. To clean the separation pad,
wipe it with a cloth moistened with alcohol. Do not touch the separation
pad.
5. If a PF roller has been in use for many years, it becomes dirty and
begins to lose its ability to pick up paper. This roller faces up when the
printer is idle and is difficult to clean. Clean the roller as follows:
Remove the paper cassette.

Turn the printer off and back on. This resets the ASF.
Wipe the PF roller with an alcohol-moistened cloth as the roller

rotates.
PROBLEM: PRINTER LOADS MULTIPLE SHEETS OF PAPER.
The stack lowering mechanism may not be functioning properly. Make
sure the spring in the clutch gear that brings the lifter down by 5 mm is
properly set. To check it, hold one gear steady and turn the other gear. If
the tension of the spring spins the gear back when released, the spring is
set properly. See Chapter 2 for more details about the stack lowering
mechanism.
