INK ENGAGE/DISENGAGE MECHANISM

The ink engage/disengage mechanism (or D/E mechanism) transmits
power from the paper load/eject mechanism to the pump. Figure 2-17
shows the pump frame.

Figure 2-17. Pump Frame
The gear train in the pump frame determines whether the pump/ASF
motor drives the cap unit, pump unit, or paper load/eject gear train. These
gears are the same as those in the Stylus Color 800. Please see the
Stylus Color 800 Service Manual for more details.
In Figure 2-18, the pump/ASF motor is driving the pump unit. When the
printer begins to drive the pump, the carriage hits the slider, then the slider
moves planetary gear 1 to the left. The carriage also compresses return
spring 1, which is on the same shaft as planetary gear 1. When this spring
expands, it moves planetary gear 1 to the right. The pump/ASF motor then
drives planetary gear 1, which drives the semicircular cam gear. As the
cam gear turns, planetary gear 2 is pushed out the hole in the right frame.
