Once the carriage hits the flag, the transmission and PG driver gears
disengage. When the PF motor turns counterclockwise, the transmission
gear meshes with and drives the PG driver gear. Figure 2-21 shows the
gear train when the platen gap is small, before the PG driver gear rotates.

PG Driver Gear
Once the transmission gear engages the PG driver gear, the PF motor
drives the PG driver gear. (See Figure 2-20.) Figure 2-22 shows the gear
train when the platen gap is wide.

When the PG driver (clutch) gear starts turning, the transmission gear
turns, altering the positions of the gears shown in figures 2-21 and 2-22.
Some gears have smooth edges without teeth. If the PG driver gear tries
to drive these gears too far, the PG driver gear slips and disengages. This
keeps the platen gap between 1.2 and 2.1 mm.
