6.1 Load Balancing Overview

This section describes the background, classification, and basic concepts of load balancing.
Background
Rapid development of the Internet, increasing users and diversified services present increasingly
high requirements for network performance. There are two ways available to improve overall
network performance:
l
l
Using high-performance servers or more links can achieve these goals; however, existing
network infrastructure and devices have to be replaced and investment must be increased.
Load balancing improves network performance without increasing investment. Load balancing
technology equally distributes services to multiple network devices or links.
Load balancing technology has the following advantages:

Classification
The load balancing modes are classified based on different factors:
l
l
l
Issue 01 (2012-03-15)
Increase network bandwidth.
Improve performance of network devices, such as servers and firewalls.
High reliability
If one or more network devices or links are faulty, the load balancing-supported system
equally distributes services among normal devices or links so that services are not
interrupted.
High performance
The network devices load balancing services function as a large-capacity logical device to
process services.
Extensibility
Network devices or links can be added to load balancing groups to meet increasing service
requirements.
Physical location
– Local load balancing: is performed among the server groups at the same physical
location.
– Global load balancing: is performed among the server groups that are located at different
physical locations with different network structures. This mode is applicable to the
enterprise or corporation having servers at different locations, allowing enterprise's
employees to access their nearest servers using the same IP address or domain name.
Load balancing object
– Link load balancing: is performed among different links.
– Server load balancing: is performed among different servers.
– Firewall load balancing: is performed among different firewalls.
