6.2 Load Balancing Features Supported by the SPU

This section describes the load balancing features and implementation supported by the SPU.
Egress Link Load Balancing
An enterprise typically leases two or more Internet Service Provider (ISP) egresses to insure
network availability against faults on the egress device. These faults may cause network
availability to degrade. The enterprise must then plan for the best use of multiple ISP egresses.
That is, the resources should be efficiently used by the enterprise. Traditional policy-based
routing (PBR) can provide the efficient use of the egresses, but PBR is difficult to configure. In
addition, the PBR is inflexible, which cannot dynamically adapt to the network structure change.
The PBR cannot distribute packets according to the bandwidth. As a result, the link with the
high throughput cannot be fully used.
The dynamic load balancing algorithm enables multiple egress links to share the traffic. The
algorithm is easily configured and adapts to the network structure change.

Based on load balancing of network devices, firewall load balancing ensures bidirectional
traffic of a session passes through the same firewall.
Firewall load balancing has the following benefits:
– Reducing or removing the bottleneck of the firewall (enhancing network performance
and scalability)
– Enhancing firewall availability and network security
Firewall load balancing is classified into the following types:
– Standard firewall load balancing
– Transparent firewall load balancing
