Maintaining the Purged Packed Inlet
To Install a Packed Metal Column
10 Condition the column, if necessary. See
11 Place GC in maintenance mode: Maintenance > Instrument > Perform Maintenance >
Be careful! The oven, inlet, and/or detector may be hot enough to cause burns. If the oven,

inlet, or detector is hot, wear heat-resistant gloves to protect your hands.
12 If required, install a packed column adapter onto the detector column fitting. See
13 Place a nut and ferrule onto the packed column.
14 Attach the column to the detector or detector adapter. Finger-tighten the nut.
15 Using two wrenches, one on the adapter and one on the column nut, tighten the column
16 Exit maintenance mode. Select Maintenance > Instrument > Perform Maintenance >
17 Establish a flow of carrier gas and purge as recommended by the packing manufacturer.
18 Heat the oven to 200 °C, cool it to a safe handling temperature, then re-tighten the column
19 Restore the analytical method.
20 After the GC becomes ready, wait 10 minutes then ignite the detector flame or adjust

Generally:
20 to 30 mL/min for 2-mm id glass or 1/8-inch od metal columns
50 to 60 mL/min for 4-mm id glass or 1/4-inch od metal columns
connection. (Re-tighten until snug, only about 15 degrees rotation.) Repeat two more
times. This process will set the Vespel/graphite ferrule to help prevent leaks.
For FPD+, immediately turn off the flame.
For NPD, immediately turn off the bead.
