Battery Maintenance

The battery is a sea led type and does n ot requ i re a ny
maintenance other than
routine
d uring storage.
lt is not possible to adjust the electrolyte level in the
battery.
Note:
The charge level in the battery must be
maintained to maximise the battery life.
With norma l use of the m otorcycle, the charg i n g system
will keep the battery charged. If the moto rcycle is u nused
the battery will g radually discharge due to battery self
discharge and the continuous cu rrent drain for the clock
and the eng ine control module memory.
The rate of battery discha rge can be g reatly i ncreased by
the
addition
of electrica l
accessories.
If the motorcycle is used for very short jou rneys, the
alternator will not have enough tim e to replenish the
charge used to start and run it. Therefore, the battery
should be charged after each retu rn jou rney fol lowing the
instructions and advice g iven here and in the owner
handbook under the sections Battery Discharge and
Battery Discharge During Storage and I nfrequent Use of
the Motorcycle.
Allowin g a battery to d ischarg e, or leaving it discharged
over a period of time, causes sulphation of the lead plates

Sulphation is a normal chemical reaction inside the battery
and over a period of time sul phate will crystal l ise on to the
lead plates making charg i n g difficult or i m possible. The
result is a permanently da maged battery, wh ich would not
be covered by the motorcycle warranty.
Keeping a battery at fu ll charge reduces the cha nce of it
freezing i n cold cond itions. Allowing a battery to freeze
can cause serious internal damage to the battery.
When leaving the motorcycle standing for more tha n a
few days, regularly check the battery Voltage using a
digital m u ltimeter. Should the battery Voltage fa ll below
1 2 . 8V, charge the battery using the BatteryMate 1 5 0-9 .
Refer
to
the
instructions
BatteryMate 1 5 0-9.
For extended periods of storage (beyond two weeks) the
battery should be removed and the battery Voltage
checked regularly and charged when below 1 2 . 8V.
