FFI™ FUEL INJECTION
Preliminary Tests
Since electrical, fuel, and ignition systems interact, a symptom can have more than one cause. To determine
the faulty system, perform the following steps. Once a system is isolated, use the Diagnostic Guide to further
define the problem and lead to the appropriate Action Step.
Step 1: Check all ground wires and wire connectors for tightness, damage, or corrosion. Poor grounds can
cause many symptoms including failure to start and misfiring. Disassemble, clean, and reinstall any questionable
ground connections. Check the circuit breaker.
Loose ground connections are the #1 cause of engine malfunction. Make sure to check all ground circuits first,
before moving on to next Action Steps.
Step 2: Examine spark plugs for indications of rich or lean cylinders, fouling, or evidence of internal damage.
Step 3: Retrieve any service codes and correct if possible.
Step 4: If engine won't crank, check the following:
Battery and connections: There are two ground wires on the Genesis FFI™.
Check circuit breakers. Go to Diagnostic Guide
Step 5: If engine will crank but not start, eliminate the stop switch first by testing the black and yellow wires
that lead to the stop switch. If okay, perform cranking spark test with timing light.
Results:
Steady spark on all - fault is in fuel or electrical system. Go to Step 6.
No spark - test battery for full charge.
No spark - Inspect starter. Check for too much voltage drop. See Electrical Section.
No spark on some or all - note problem cylinders. Go to appropriate symptom in Diag
nostic Guide.
Step 6: If engine will run, perform the following tests (while problem is occurring, if possible).
NOTE: Polaris Diagnostic Software is able to perform cylinder drop tests, as well as provide live engine
data, and should be used with the following procedures.
A: Monitor each spark plug lead with a timing light. Look for only one flash per revolution consistently.
Results:
All show steady flash - check or replace spark plugs.
All show steady flash - fault is fuel or electrical. Go to Step B.
Intermittent output or multiple fire on some - note problem cylinders. Go to appropriate
symptom in Diagnostic Guide.
B: Monitor each fuel injector signal using a timing light (use care to clip onto only one wire).
Results:
All show steady flash - suspect faulty fuel delivery system, low 45 volt system output,
or failed injector. Go to appropriate symptom in Diagnostic Guide.
Intermittent output on some - note problem cylinders. Go to appropriate symptom in
Diagnostic Guide.
NOTE:
If running problem occurs above 3500 RPM, the engine may be in S.L.O.W.™.
See Causes of
S.L.O.W.™ in this section. A service code will be associated with any of these conditions. Go to appropriate
symptom in Diagnostic Guide.
