VBrick 9000 Encoder Admin Guide
Description
Advanced Setting. Range 0–800 ms. Default = 200 ms. Jitter is
the variation in time between packets of data arriving at the
decoder. The amount of jitter present in a media stream depends
on (1) the capabilities and configuration of the encoder creating
the stream and (2) on the network carrying the stream from the
encoder to the decoder. The decoder can compensate for jitter by
buffering extra data so that playback can be smooth and
consistent even when the data stream has bursts and droughts—
but adding extra buffering to handle jitter has the disadvantage of
adding latency.
The VBrick 9000 Series decoder has an adjustable Jitter Queue
Time so you can choose the right balance between handling jitter
and achieving low latency. The default setting of 200 ms works
well when the decoder is playing streams from VBrick 9000 Series
encoders over a good network and will result in low end-to-end
latency of approximately 300 ms. The Jitter Queue doubles as a
re-ordering queue so if your network delivers packets out of order
you can increase the Jitter Queue time to compensate. If your
decoder will be playing streams from a VBrick 7000 Series
encoder, you should configure the Jitter Queue Time to 600 ms
or higher. For more information see Automatic Latency Control .
