The Blade Server Concept
General information
The server blade combines all the core components of a traditional server. It
contains one or two CPUs, the main memory and one or two Ultra320 SCSI
hard disk drives on which the operating system and application programs are
installed. The server blade comes with extensive I/O capabilities, as there are
two Gigabit Ethernet ports, two optional 2-Gigabit Fibre Channel ports and one
optional PCI expansion slot. The VGA and USB connectors at the front of each
server blade can be used for local, on-site maintenance.
The PRIMERGY BX600 chassis provides redundant and hot-pluggable infra-
structure modules that are connected to the server blades by means of a
passive midplane. The management blades provide the remote management
interface. The Gigabit Ethernet switch blades connect the Gigabit Ethernet
ports of the server blades to the LAN. The Fibre Channel pass-thru blades are
responsible for connection to a SAN, using the optional FC module for each
server blade. The infrastructure is rounded off by a KVM switch and an SCSI
module for connecting external backup devices.
The two management blades have separate LAN connections for maintaining
accessibility to the system even when the standard traffic network connections
are down.
Application areas
As economical, ultra-compact systems, the mono or dual CPU server blades
are ideal for use by company data centers and Internet service providers. They
are perfectly suited for large application servers, terminal servers for CPU-
intensive applications, and DBMS servers.
Other common application areas:
– Internet and caching services (Microsoft IIS and Linux Apache)
– Web cache (Inktomi traffic server, Microsoft ISA server or Volera)
– Streaming media
– DNS server, VPN gateway, SSL/LB, firewall intrusion protection
– IP load balancing, clustering (F5 BIG-IP, Microsoft NLBS, Linux LVS)
– Terminal server (Citrix)
– Communications or front-end applications
