The early 2-piece wire harness is equipped with six in-line diodes. It was later replaced with a 1-piece wire
harness retaining four of the in-line diodes (diodes 1, 2, 5, & 6). The following table describes each diode's
function in the electrical system, location in the wire harness, and symptom(s) of failure.

FUNCTION
Differential solenoid coil flyback
diode
Fan motor flyback diode
Differential relay coil isolation diode

FAILURE
SYMPTOM/COMMENT
CONDITION
Will contribute to the premature
Open
failure of the differential relay or
limit switch contacts.
With key switch ON, the 30-amp
Closed
fuse (on w125) will blow repeatedly
until the diode has been replaced.
Will contribute to the premature
Open
failure of the fan relay contacts.
The 30-amp fuse (on w109) will
Closed
blow repeatedly until the diode has
been replaced.
Differential solenoid is energized all
of the time, even when Forward/
Open
Reverse handle is in the NEUTRAL
position.
May allow the vehicle to be started
Closed
when Forward/Reverse handle is in
FORWARD or REVERSE positions.
