  • Page 8 (55$7$#6+((7 MEGAMUX PLUS TDM OPERATOR'S INSTRUCTIONS Publication No. 036R660-000, Issue 9 OVERVIEW The VLBRV (Very Low Bit Rate Voice) or VLBRV/FAX Channel Module is an analog voice channel card for the MEGAMUX PLUS TDM. It provides voice encoding algorithms that max- imize voice channel bandwidth utilization while offering low bit rate values of 9600, 4800 and 2400 bps.
  • Page 9 Circuit Type The circuit type entry defines the type of voice signal that the channel multiplexes. The selection is determined by the equipment connected to the channel. The circuit type must also be supported by the VLBRV Channel Module associated with the channel number. The VLBRV Channel Module receives and transmits VF (Voice Frequency) signals.
  • Page 10 Alarm Cut-Off (ACO) The VLBRV has the capability to generate alarms indicating failures related to the VLBRV Channel Module's operation. Alarms are indicated through front panel indicators, messages dis- played in the system alarm scan, or by the VLBRV Channel alarm scan. When alarm cut-off (ACO) is selected, the VLBRV Channel Module cannot report alarm conditions to the system.
  • Page 11 VLBRV CHANNEL PARAMETERS CONFIGURATION Once the correct aggregate rate is entered, VLBRV channel parameters are entered or modified as required by the configuration. To select the VLBRV channel parameter display (if it is not already on the screen), select the Configuration routine from the Main Menu. Next, select the appropriate Modify/Display TDM Configuration routine from the Configuration Menu.
  • Page 12 CIRCUIT NAME The circuit name is a channel identifier assigned by the user. The name may be up to six alpha- numeric characters in length: The name may include any punctuation or non-standard char-acters available on the keyboard. However, the first character entered must be an alpha character. You enter the circuit name by typing the desired characters.
  • Page 13 ACO ON/OFF Alarm Cutoff selects whether alarms in the VLBRV Channel Module are reported and logged in the alarm scan, or indicated by the Common Alarm Plus Module front panel indicators. This feature is useful when a malfunctioning channel produces enough alarms to prevent alarm reporting on oth- er channels.
  • Page 14 Digital Test The Digital Test uses the digital circuitry of the data origin node VLBRV Channel to generate a digital "quiet channel pattern." If the data origin node is the same as the loopback point (a local loopback) the digital pattern is looped back at the interface between the Transmit/Receive Logic Plus module and the VLBRV Channel Module.
  • Page 15 The following instructions apply to the Rcv dB Levels routine: 1. Select the Channel diagnostics and Data Path Test. Use the up or down cursor position keys to select RCV dB. Use the left and right cursor position keys to move the cursor to the Data Origin field.

6HFWLRQ#5=##6\VWHP#2YHUYLHZ Overview This section gives a description of the MEGAMUX PLUS system, with emphasis placed on the system characteristics that you will encounter when operating MEGAMUX PLUS through the su- pervisory port CRT interface. The intention of this section is to provide background information that will help you to make informed choices when configuring a MEGAMUX PLUS system.
  • Page 31 System Overview Each component is described in the following paragraphs: Common Set The common set comprises the Transmit/Receive Logic Plus module, the Clock Generator Plus module, and, in systems with more than 22 channels, the Expansion Plus module. The Transmit/ Receive Logic Plus module selects data from channels, and assembles channel data into an aggre- gate data stream for transmission to the opposite-end MEGAMUX PLUS TDM.
  • Page 32 System Overview The Voice II/CVSD channel module uses Continuously Variable Slope Delta (CVSD) modula- tion techniques to perform voice-to-data and data-to-voice conversions. The term CVSD is used in all supervisory port inter-face displays to refer to the Voice II/CVSD module. The Voice II/ CVSD Channel can operate using a range of data rates from 14.4 kbps to 64.0 kbps.

System Overview BUILDING A CONFIGURATION A MEGAMUX PLUS TDM may be delivered and installed with a complete set of configurations, or may be installed completely unconfigured. Even when the unit is completely pre-configured, you will probably need to make minor adjustments to some channel configurations. When creating a new configuration, you should follow these steps: Name the system configuration (up to ten characters are allowed in the name;...
  • Page 36: Entering An Aggregate Rate

System Overview ENTERING AN AGGREGATE RATE When creating an aggregate configuration, you should always enter the aggregate rate before con- figuring channels. Once an aggregate rate is entered, the selected and measured aggregate rates appear below every channel parameter display: SELECTED AGGREGATE RATE 2.048 MHZ EST.
  • Page 37: Channel Configuration/Parameters

System Overview A situation may exist in which a MEGAMUX PLUS is powered up before the incoming aggregate clock is present. In this case, the MEGAMUX PLUS will not know what rate to frame to and syn- chronization with the other end may not occur. Two enhancements in the 4.00 release alleviate this problem.
  • Page 38 System Overview Channel Number The channel number associates a set of channel parameters with a channel module in the MEGA- MUX PLUS TDM shelf: The channel number is determined by the position of the channel mod- ule in the shelf. Channel numbers run from 1 up to a maximum of 54 (you must have one expansion shelf for a system with up to 38 channels, and two expansion shelves for a 54-channel system).

  • Page 42 System Overview 2-13 CADM CADM is a digital voice channel used for foreign applications only. This circuit type should nev- er be selected for domestic applications. PCM-T (Pulse-Coded Modulation) PCM-T is selected when the Voice II/ASP Channel module is used but a higher fixed data rate of 64 kbps is desired.
  • Page 43 There are many standard baud rates available from the MEGAMUX PLUS TDM. If a baud rate required for a channel is not available as a standard rate, General DataComm can provide a custom-programmed Clock Generator Plus module that produces the required timing signal.
  • Page 44 System Overview 2-15 is because the two timing signals, no matter how precise, have some difference in frequency. One timing signal inevitably is slightly faster or slower than the other, so that one signal lags behind the other: This would eventually result in data errors. MEGAMUX PLUS has the ability to either generate a master timing signal for the system, or to phase-lock system timing to an external source.
  • Page 45 2-16 System Overview Transmit External/Receive Internal This selection is made for modem "tail" circuits operating from a channel interface. The timing sig- nal from the MEGAMUX PLUS channel is provided to the modem connected to the channel, along with the receive data output from the channel. The modem encodes the timing signal with the data, and transmits the combined modulated signal to the far-end modem (remember that the receive data from the channel is the transmit data into the modem).
  • Page 46 System Overview 2-17 The most common application for this timing arrangement is when ATT's DDS (Digital Data- phone Service) is used as either an aggregate link or a channel 22 tail circuit. ATT maintains a precise timing signal (derived from an atomic clock) across all DDS links. If a DDS link provides the master timing source for the MEGAMUX PLUS system, any channel that connects to a DDS tail circuit link should be set for external transmit and receive timing.
  • Page 47: Vf Db Levels

2-18 System Overview VF dB Levels The output level of any voice channel is selected as a channel parameter. The level may be spec- ified in a range of +1.5 dB to -6.0 dB, with .5 dB between each level (a total of 16 selectable lev- els).
  • Page 48: Interface Type (I/F Type)

System Overview 2-19 Interface Type (I/F Type) An interface type must be specified for every data channel. The interface type determines the con- trol signal arrangement used at the Node M and Node S ends of the channel. The flexibility of the MEGAMUX PLUS system allows support of many communications arrangements, and provides display and control over the interfaces through the supervisory port CRT.
  • Page 49 2-20 System Overview Data Channel Interface There are eight selectable data channel interface types. Each interface type supports a particular communications link between two data devices. The eight types are: • CPU to Terminal - (CTA1) • CPU to Terminal - DCD/DSR On (CTRL) •...

  • Page 53 2-24 System Overview A Data II, III or UDC Channel Module, when set for a particular application, has program plugs PP1 and PP2 set to support that application. The settings of these two plugs select up to four control signals from the device connected to the channel at that node. Both data channel modules can trans- mit the On or Off state of the selected signals across the TDM link to the data channel module at the opposite node.
  • Page 54 System Overview 2-25 If the signal selected as SEND Control l changes state from Off to On, the transition is encoded and transmitted as channel data. This eliminates virtually all delay in transmitting the signal change, allowing the channel to support polling and other arrangements requiring fast control sig- nal transmission.

  • Page 73: Selecting An Aggregate Rate

Configuration SELECTING AN AGGREGATE RATE When entering a configuration, the aggregate rate for the configuration should always be selected before any channel parameters are chosen. Once the aggregate rate is entered, the Current Parame- ters display reports the amount of aggregate bandwidth available after each new rate is selected. This prevents the creation of a configuration too large to be multiplexed at the selected aggregate rate.
  • Page 74: Selecting Channel Parameters

Configuration The following defines each selection. ".." selection - allows the 1's density requirements to be established by the T1 or T1/D4 Piggy- back Card installed on the Redundancy Control Plus module. The T1 and T1/D4 Piggyback Cards contain option selection devices which allow the 1's density feature to be enabled or disabled. 0 selection - completely inhibits the 1's density feature.
  • Page 75 Configuration number and type are only accessible after a circuit type is entered. When you select a circuit type, default values are displayed for the channel parameters associated with the circuit type. These de- fault values are displayed and stored until you change them. The name of the TDM configuration can also be changed during channel configuration.
  • Page 76 Configuration BAUD RATE The baud rate of a channel is determined by the baud rate of the equipment connected to the chan- nel. With the cursor positioned at BAUD RATE, you begin the selection by pressing the Return key; the standard MEGAMUX PLUS channel rates and SPECIAL RATES selections appear be- low the channel parameters display.
  • Page 77 Configuration NA32K This 32 kbps mode complies with the current ADPCM joint standard provided by CCITT G.721 and ANSI committee T1Y1.2. This operating mode is preferable for voice applications; it provides superior performance in an idle channel situation. Use this operating mode for 32 kbps voice chan- nels unless a specific application dictates selection of another mode.

6HFWLRQ#;=##'LDJQRVWLF#)XQFWLRQV Overview This section describes the Diagnostic Function routines provided through the MEGAMUX PLUS supervisory port CRT interface. The initiation of diagnostic routines is described; the purpose of these diagnostic routines is also discussed. These diagnostic functions are only part of the diag- nostic features available in the MEGAMUX PLUS TDM system.
  • Page 103 Diagnostic Functions Alarm Cut-Off The diagnostic routines allow you to set Alarm Cut-Off (ACO) on or off for the involved compo- nent. You may want to set ACO On to avoid generating alarm messages during a test; you may also want to set ACO Off, to use alarm messages in evaluating test results.
  • Page 104 Diagnostic Functions AUTO FRAME Diagnostics There are two additional diagnostics that can be performed for this card: Re-measure Aggregate Clock Under some rare circumstances, the AUTO FRAME may have powered up before the aggregate clock source is available. If this occurs, the AUTO FRAME module cannot determine the fre- quency to base the data frame on.

If the TDM system is Out of Sync, you will be allowed to initiate a User Data Test at the Node S supervisory port CRT interface, with data origin and loopback point at Node S. This test can de- termine if the Out of Sync problem is caused at Node S, or due to failures elsewhere in the system (see the following paragraphs).

There are several uses for the test: • When you are using special interface types created specifically for your system, you must use this routine to force signals On or Off. You may also modify a standard interface for a particular channel by forcing signals On or Off, or changing the state of a signal already forced On or Off.
