2.11 Lead link axis
Term
A lead link axis allows read access to the axis data (setpoint, actual value, ...) on another
NCU.
Introduction
The lead link axis concept offers a solution for the following problems:
The individual machining and handling stations are to move synchronous with or in relation
to a common master value in so-called clocked sequences. The dependent axes are
interpolated from another NCU, not the one interpolating the leading axis.
Characteristics of a lead link axis
Cross-NCU couplings possible.
Several NCUs can be linked to a leading axis of another NCU.
The link grouping can include up to 8 NCUs connected via link communication. Axis values
and other information about link communication can be exchanged between the leading axis
and the following axes.
The axis or spindle are usually equal in their role as leading unit of an axis coupling.
The same interpolation cycle must be set for all NCUs participating in the coupling.
Restrictions
● An axis (leading axis) that is referenced by a lead link axis cannot be a link axis, i.e. be

● A lead link axis cannot be the programmed leading axis in a gantry grouping.
● Couplings with lead link axes cannot be cascaded.
● Axis replacement can only be implemented within the home NCU of the lead link axis.
Lead link axes allow cross-NCU couplings where the master value axis and the following
axes are programmed/interpolated on different NCUs (see supplementary conditions).
