PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
I - Wash planet carrier assembly in cleaning sol­
vent and air dry.

Inspect planet pinions for nicks or other tooth
damage.
3 . Check end clearance of planet pinions. This
clearance should be .006 - . 0 3 0 " (Fig, 7F-58).
4. Check input sun gear for tooth damage.
5. Inspect output shaft bearing surface for nicks
or scoring.
6. Inspect output shaft splines for nicks or damage.
To disassemble the planet carrier to replace worn
or damaged parts, proceed as follows:
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove planet pinion shaft lock plate screws
and lockwashers (Fig. 7F-59).
2. Rotate lock plate clockwise and remove.
NOTE:
If gears are to be reused,
mark them in
some
convenient
way so that they can be
rein­
stalled
in their original
position, facing
original
direction.
If this is not done, the gear set may be
noisy.
3 . Starting with a short planet pinion, push out
pinion shaft.
Remove pinion, needle bearings and
thrust washers.
4. Repeat Step 3 to remove the remaining two
short pinions.
