CYLINDER COMPRESSION TEST
To avoid discharging
the battery, do not
operate the
starter
motor for more
than seven
sec-
onds.
Warm
up the
engine
to normal ope rating
tempera-
ture.
Open and support
the
fuel
tank using the
equipped
tools
(page 3-5).
Stop
the
engine and remove
the
al
l direct
ignit
ion
coil/spark
plug
caps
and spark
plugs
(page 3-7).
Disconnect the
fu
el
pump 2P (Brown) connector.
Install
a compression gauge
into
the
spark plug
hole.
TOOL:
Compression gauge

07RMJ-MY50100
(Equivalent
commer-
cially available in
U.S.A.)
Open the throttle all the way and crank
the
engine
with
the starter
motor
until the gauge
reading
stops
rising.
The
maximum reading
is
usually
reached within
4-
7 seconds.
Compression pressure:
981-
1,373 kPa
(10.0
-14.0 kgf/cm
2
,
142-178
psi) at
300 rpm
Low
compression can be caused by:
-
Blown cylinder head gasket
-
Improper
valve adjustment
-
Valve leakage
-
Worn piston
ring
or cylinder
High
compression can be caused by:
-
Carbon deposits in combustion chamber or on
piston
crown

Open
and
support the
fuel
tank using
t he
equipped
tools (page 3-5).
Remove the
bolt
and
fuel tank
stopper
chain from
t
he fuel tank.
