BD FocalPoint™ Slide Profiler Processing Messages
Unable to detect coverslip edges
One or more of the coverslip edges were not detected within the expected area. Ensure that the
slide is clean and properly seated and that the coverslip is within limits. Repair and rerun. If the
slide cannot be successfully rerun, it must be screened by a cytotechnologist.
Unable to determine CS surface
The surface sensor was unable to touch the surface successfully enough times to describe the
orientation of the slide. Either the slide is not seated properly, the coverslip is not the proper size,
or the coverslip is not properly positioned. Ensure that the slide is properly seated and that the
coverslip is within limits. Repair and rerun. If the slide cannot be successfully rerun, it must be
screened by a cytotechnologist.
Unable to focus, coverslip tilted
The detected coverslip was rotated more than the amount permitted. Check the coverslip
placement and ensure that the coverslip is clean and within limits. Repair and rerun. If the slide
cannot be successfully rerun, it must be screened by a cytotechnologist.
Unable to read slide barcode
The barcode reader was unable to detect a valid slide barcode number. Ensure that the barcode
is clean and undamaged and correctly oriented. Repair and rerun. If the slide cannot be
successfully rerun, it must be screened by a cytotechnologist. Refer to Section 13.2.6 for more
information on supported barcode formats.
Tray processing halted
The operator has pressed the Eject Tray button causing the system to halt the processing of a
tray. Rerun the slide. If the slide cannot be successfully rerun, it must be screened by a
cytotechnologist.
Switch to SurePath Glass
A switch slide has changed the operating mode of the system to SurePath Glass.
Switch to SurePath Plastic
A switch slide has changed the operating mode of the system to SurePath Plastic.

Scant Cellularity

The BD FocalPoint™ Slide Profiler evaluates each slide to verify that it contains enough cellular
material to be processed. If any one of the cellularity limit checks fails, the Processing Result will
be Scant cellularity with description of the failure given.
The following list describes the various reasons for which a slide can be rejected. In some cases
it may be possible to reposition or clean the coverslip and rerun the slide. Refer to Section 15.2,
for proper usage information. All slides that exhibit scant cellularity that cannot be repaired and
rerun must be manually reviewed by a cytotechnologist.
Insufficient reference cells
Too few free-lying squamous intermediate cells are present for analysis. This error could also
occur if the stain is too light. Review the slide manually.
Scant specimen or upside down
An insufficient amount of cellular material was found for focusing on the center of the slide, or the
slide has been placed upside down in the tray, with the specimen on the side facing the floor and
the barcode label on the top. Rerun or review manually.
Bubble, 3D (too 3 dimensional) or scant specimen
The system was unable to focus adequately on the specimen. Potential causes include: an
insufficient amount of cellular material, the specimen not covering enough area under the
coverslip, the specimen being too three-dimensional, or bubbles. Rerun or review manually.
