Configuration Planning Tasks

!
Diagram the
Planned
Configuration
This section describes operations that you must perform to properly
plan a Connectrix installation. The operations (and the pages that
described them) are:
Diagram the Planned Configuration on page 5-31 — Draw a picture,
showing device types, descriptions, addresses, and distances
between devices.
Assign Port Names and Nicknames on page 5-32 — Assign names
that will identify switch ports in Connectrix Manager operations.
Prepare a Site Plan on page 5-34 — Study the installation site to
determine optimum placement of the components, and to assure
that an adequate environment (for example: power, cooling, and
floor load) is available.
Establish Security Measures on page 5-35 — Plan protection for the
physical components as well as the data on the devices.
Complete Planning Checklists on page 5-36 — Complete a checklist
of planning activities to maximize efficiency in carrying out the
process.
CAUTION
Be sure to review the rest of this chapter thoroughly before
performing the tasks described in this section.
You should start the planning process by determining the host and
peripheral devices that will attach to each component of the EC-1200
cabinet, and if and where connectivity should be limited. Host and
peripheral devices can include servers, storage and storage control
devices, and other Connectrix devices in a multiswitch fabric.
It is helpful to draw a configuration diagram, such as the example
shown in Figure 5-11. Include distances between cabinets and
end-devices. Also include a name or nickname for each switch port,
as described under Assign Port Names and Nicknames on page 5-32.
Enter the port names and attached devices onto the planning
worksheet in Appendix E.
