Windows NT Consolidation Design Example
B
The assignment of links to physical ports on the ED-64M is similar to
the logical topology assignment of servers to Symmetrix ports. The
assignment is simpler because capacity and performance issues are
not factors.
Availability, however, is an important factor. The goal is to minimize
the interruption impact of a port card failure, by spreading the
application, Symmetrix links, and spare ports evenly over the eight
port cards. The failure of any port card will interrupt only one
Symmetrix link and, at most, one spare port. If a port on a port card
fails, the link can be moved to a spare port.
As long as the standard practice of single-HBA zoning based on the
N_Port's WWPN has been followed, the N_Port will use the Name
Server and automatically reestablish logins with the N_Ports
designated by its Zone(s). The persistent binding in the host will
insure that the association of the storage port to the operating
system's device name will also be maintained.
Each port card contains four ports, numbered sequentially. The
assignment in this case began with the application links on the low
side of the low-numbered port cards, and the Symmetrix links on the
high side of the high-numbered port cards.
