Planning Considerations
5
The connection to the customer network can be through an Ethernet
hub or a switch. This connection is made directly to the Connectrix
service processor, not to the Connectrix hub.
Recommendation
EMC recommends connecting the customer's network to the
10/100Base-T Ethernet adapter in the service processor, in order to
take advantage of the faster network speed for Connectrix client
access, and to utilize the FibreAlliance MIB.
Single IP Address
Dual Ethernet support simplifies Ethernet network setup and
configuration. Only a single IP address needs to be allocated from the
customer's address domain for the service processor, and this
address may be assigned statically or dynamically using DHCP.
Individual IP addresses for each of the directors on the private
Connectrix network need not be allocated and configured by the
customer. Instead, the directors use fixed IP addresses as configured
in the factory.
If the Connectrix service processor(s) and switch(s) are not on a
separate Connectrix network that is isolated from the customer data
network, it is necessary to arrange for new IP addresses and
corresponding Domain Name Service (DNS) host names for the
service processor and switches.
Figure 5-10 illustrates a typical EC-1200 dual Ethernet configuration
with four Connectrix cabinets on a dedicated LAN segment. The
Ethernet cables are shown for illustrative purposes only. Ethernet
cables are most frequently routed under the installation site's
flooring.
