Unpredictable results are likely to occur when multiple HBAs in the
same server are configured in the same zone and the server is
running PowerPath 2.0 or earlier. Single-HBA zoning with
PowerPath 2.0 has proven to be a robust combination for path
availability and load balancing.
Single-HBA zoning has shown itself to be a good tool for
documenting a fabric environment. It reveals the intent of the logical
topology by specifing which Symmetrix ports each HBA is intended
to drive. If all HBAs and all Symmetrix ports are put into a common
zone and Volume Logix is used to control access, the fabric
management system cannot reveal this design intent. If a port card on
an ED-64M or ED-140M needs to be replaced and single-HBA zoning
has been used, the Connectrix Manager Find WWN/Nickname
function can be easily used with the Symmetrix Fibre Channel
director's nickname to identify all HBAs that will be affected by the
repair.
