Connectrix Naming Guidelines

3-14
Connectrix v6.02 Planning Guide
Consistent and meaningful conventions for naming fabrics, zone sets,
and zones can contribute to the availability and change management
of a Fibre Channel switching environment. As the size of fabrics and
the number of fabrics in an infrastructure increase, this practice
becomes very important. Availability can be severely impacted if the
wrong zone set is applied to a fabric. Building zones and changing
zone members can be done more quickly and accurately when these
objects are given meaningful names. These practices can facilitate the
infrastructure's change control when the data center staff changes.
Follow these guidelines for creating names:
Create nicknames for each switch in a fabric, and prefix each
switch nickname with a similar prefix that identifies the fabric.
The name of a fabric is taken from the name of the principal
switch. Switches in a fabric should be prefixed with identical
prefixes, so if the principal switch within a fabric changes you
will still be able to easily identify which fabric it is a member of.
A fabric consisting of four switches might be nicknamed:
f1_sw1
f1_sw2
or:
fnorth_sw1
fnorth_sw2
The advantage to keeping the nickname prefix short is that you
can use this same prefix in front of any zone sets you create.
Assigning nicknames is done from the Products view or Topology
view. (This is not the switch identification, which is done from the
Hardware view.)
There is now an option to use the Description as the switch Nickname
from the Configure Identification dialog box
Follow the single-HBA zoning guidelines described under
Single-HBA Zoning on page 3-7.
Create nicknames for each host HBA zone member. Give each
zone member a name that identifies the server and accounts for
multiple HBAs in a single server. Make the name lowercase; for
example: exchange1_hba0.
f1_sw3
f1_sw4
fnorth_sw3
fnorth_sw4
