Consolidation Design Example
Connectrix v6.02 Planning Guide
B-2
Assume that a Data Center is serving the IT needs of an organization
with six departments. These departments require IT services that run
on Windows NT, including: SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange, Internet
Communications, file, and print.
The specific needs and workloads might require a server population
such as the following:
Application
Number of Servers
File
5
Print
3
Comm
5
Exchange
6
SQL
4
Total Servers
23
The customer's application-level availability strategy will have a
standby server for each application. If any file server fails, a standby
server will be booted and configured to replace it. This step of the
strategy is planned for a later phase, and is covered in this example.
Based on an application-level availability model, the customer
chooses to populate each server with one Fibre Channel HBA.
A capacity and bandwidth analysis of the customer's Symmetrix
needs determines that a minimum Symmetrix port count of four
should be sufficient.
