ISL Performance

As an ISL planning guideline, compute the number of ISLs between
domains by estimating the load on the Symmetrix ports. The relevent
load is the load sourced from HBAs that are one ISL away from their
Symmetrix ports. Provide one ISL for every pair of heavily loaded
(20 to 40 MBps) Symmetrix ports. If the Symmetrix ports are lightly
loaded (10 Mps or less), a ratio of four Symmetrix ports per ISL is a
starting point for planning. This provides sufficient ISL bandwidth to
the environment if one of the ISLs fails. For availability, provide a
minimum of two ISLs between domains. ISLs can be added on-line,
as required.
If the Symmetrix ports are very heavily loaded (greater than 40
MBps), consider locating the high-demand server on the same switch
as the Symmetrix port.
EMC ControlCenter Workload Analyzer is recommended for
analyzing Symmetrix loads, and can be used to plan fabric
topologies, isolate loads, and plan remediation.
