Physical and Logical Topologies
Figure 4-1
The Fibre Channel switch environment consists of a physical
topology and a logical topology. The physical topology describes the
physical interconnects among devices (servers, storage, and the EMC
switch/director in the EMC-specific environment). The logical
topology describes the logical paths established between the
operating system device names and their associated Symmetrix ports
and volumes.
In Figure 4-1, the solid lines and their connections represent the
physical topology and the dotted lines represent the logical topology.

Physical and Logical Topologies
Logical topologies in the Fibre Channel switch environment can
generally be described in terms of fan-in and fan-out. In the
Symmetrix environment, in and out mean into and out of the
Symmetrix. Fan-in and fan-out logical topologies are solutions to
Symmetrix capacity and Symmetrix consolidation applications.
These logical topologies apply to both single-switch and multiswitch
physical topologies, and are developed over the remainder of this
chapter.
